How to Choose a Nordic Pendant Chandelier for Your Space

A chandelier is the most committed lighting decision you will make in a room, so it pays to think it through before you click 'add to cart.' The good news is that Scandinavian-inspired pendants tend to be more forgiving than ornate traditional fixtures — their clean lines and natural materials work across a wide range of interior styles, from mid-century modern to rustic farmhouse to contemporary minimalism. Scale is the first thing to nail down. A common rule of thumb is to add the room's length and width in feet and convert that number to inches — the result is a rough ideal diameter for your chandelier. So a 12-by-14-foot dining room suggests a fixture around 26 inches wide. For linear bar pendants over a rectangular table, aim for a length that is roughly two-thirds the table's length. Going slightly larger than you think you need is almost always the bolder, more satisfying choice.

Hanging height matters just as much as width. Over a dining table, the bottom of the fixture should sit 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. In an entryway or over a staircase — where a glass ball chandelier can be especially dramatic — you want at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor at the lowest point.
